Why did you decide to grow your Sisterlocks®?
I had relaxed my hair for the last time as a result of experiencing severe chemical burns along the nape of my neck. I felt like something wasn’t quite right about enduring that for the sake of “straight” hair. I decided to go natural and went back to the press & curl. I still wasn’t satisfied because at the end of the day, I just wanted healthy hair. So I began wearing my hair in styles that complimented my texture and went on an exploration of loving my hair as is. It was great… and still, I’m a very “Low Maintenance” person. A friend of mine showed me a picture of Dr. Cornwell and her 4 year old Sisterlocks®. I knew right away they’d be right for me! I loved the size, which yields a great deal of styling versatility while maintaining my natural hair texture.
How do you feel about your hair?
I love my hair!! I feel liberated and free of “hair drama”. Even on my “worst” day, I never have a ‘bad’ hair day!
What products do you use to maintain your Sisterlocks®?
No product is necessary to maintain my locks per say. My Consultant or I use Sisterlocks® tools and follow the retightening/grooming techniques on a regular 5-6 week cycle. As far as maintaining the health of my scalp and hair in general… I use Sisterlocks®, Nioxin, Biosilk and BBD King product lines.
What is your hair care routine?
Generally, I shampoo and condition at least once every 2 weeks. I keep my hair moisturized and style occasionally. I get or do my retightening every 5-6 weeks. I sleep in a silk/satin bonnet. Most of the time I’m “Free-Style”… “wash and wear” or “get up and go” our the door!
What has been the hardest part of your Sisterlocks® journey?
The hardest part has been retightening my own hair. It is a timely process, my arms get tired and I’d rather sit in the chair and have it done in one appointment. However, sometimes I have to do it myself if I want it done. Otherwise… I have no complaints.
-Do your research and consider your budget! Make sure you’re ready for locks (whether traditional or Sisterlocks®. Locking the hair is a test of patience and attracts a lot of attention… positive, negative or otherwise.
-Decide what approach will work best for you. What look (overall) you want.
-If you desire a particular style and color… cut and color BEFORE having your locks started. You won’t be able to do any of this for a while until they mature for a year or more.
-Try to find a Locktician/Consultant you can stick with. “Chair-Hopping” can begin to reveal inconsistencies in your locks if various methods are used in one head of locks.
When I first got established, I was so happy and pleased and proclaimed to my Consultant (The Roxanne Ray Gomer) that I was going to be the “poster-child” for Sisterlocks®. 12 years later, I was on the road to becoming a Certified Consultant. Currently, I can be found in the 2013 20th Anniversary Commemorative Calendar (November) and on the front of the product brochure!
