From my experience, the first stages of becoming natural were very difficult. Like myself, most Newly Naturals are so excited for their BC (Big Chop) moment and feel liberated thereafter. However, as the days and weeks go on, the uncertainty began to settle, and your self-confidence is tested. You began to ask yourself…..what have I done? What to do with my hair? The negative thoughts began to flood your mind, “I look ugly”, “My hair Nappy”, “I don’t have Tracy Ellis Ross Curls”. During this time it is important to connect with other naturals (natural hair meetups and/or a natural curl friend) draw from their experiences and learn how they overcame those “dark stages”. Use accessories and makeup, to enhance your natural beauty. If you are having trouble with styling your TWA (teeny-weeny afro), go to a natural hair stylist and allow them to use their creativity. If that’s not an option go to youtube, don’t be afraid to try new things! And most importantly have confidence!
