Why did you decide to go natural?
I actually did the Big Chop in 1999 when my sister passed away from Sickle Cell. It was a very emotional time for me and I was just looking for freedom in every avenue of my life.
How do you feel about your hair?
I Love being natural!!! I’m a Dance/Fitness Instructor, so I literally sweat all day, being natural is the only way to go. I’m free to be me!!!!
What products do you use?
I love “One N Only Aragon Oil” products. I use the moisture repair shampoo and conditioner. They both have color protection so it works well on my hair since I’m usually platinum. Through the day I use Softsheen’s Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Finishing Lotion. I’ve experimented with a lot of products. My hair is not “good” but it’s not super coarse either. So the Wave Nouveau keeps me conditioned well, gives me the wet look without being crunchy or oily and I can comb straight through.
What is your hair care routine?
LOL, I don’t really have a routine. I wash my hair simply depending on how many classes I’ve taught and how sweaty my head feels. I do Deep Condition about 1x a month.
What are your favorite hairstyles?
I like being versatile. For work I simply pull my hair back into one puff. On a Date with my hubby, I may do a little twist in the front with the Fro in the back. For church maybe a headband….I dress and do my hair according to my mood each day. I don’t really like the “Every hair perfect in place” look or perfectly picked out from on me. I’m more of a shake and go gurl.
What has been the hardest part of your natural hair journey?
Figuring out different ways to style my hair. I’m so A.D.D when it comes to my hair so I struggle with how to stay on top of new styles.
What was your proudest natural moments?
My proudest natural moments are when people comment on how I’ve inspired them to go natural. In my scream of wanting to be free, body, soul and spirit, it actually freed others…..How cool is that?
What tips/suggestions do you have for other naturals?
Just do it! Embrace who God created “YOU” to be. You are the only one that can be “YOU” so be “YOU” in a big way…Be "YOU" Bold…Be "YOU" Fierce!
Tell us about your inspiration of Dance and about your Dance studio...
Dance is my passion. When I’m dancing I tap into my purpose. When I dance nothing else matters or exists. I’m not an eloquent speaker, but I can tell you my life story in one dance. When I dance I feel alive. I want others to feel alive. I want others to feel purpose. I want others to be free to express their inner self, that’s why teaching brings me so much joy. I’ve wanted to own a Dance Studio since I was 3 years old. When I accepted Christ as Lord of my life in 2000 I thought Dance was over for me, but it had just begun! What an honor it is that God has not only given me the desire of my heart, but that he has entrusted me with this vision. I live in a small community with 5 other dance schools. My Dance Studio, Faith-In- Motion is the only school that is Faith-Based where kids can learn the techniques of dance without degrading their bodies with inappropriate movements to compromising lyrics. Women can work out in the “Ladies Only” classes of Zumba, Yoga, Boot Camp and other classes without feeling displayed or self-conscious in front of males. I’m honored to be able to offer that choice to my community and to minister to the people in such a unique way.
