Kim Kimble is a renowned celebrity hairstylist who stars in her own television reality show L.A Hair (WeTV). I have watched several episodes of the show and seemingly she is very talented. However, I rarely seen her styling natural hair, so it was interesting when I came across these videos on youtube. Kim demonstrates 3 quick natural hair updo's and in the second video she demonstrates a flat twist out using Pantene Natural Hair Products. The styles weren't extremely impressive but somewhat decent (in my opinion)....I would love to see Kim spend a little more time displaying her talent in working with natural hair, specifically on her television reality show. But who I am..... What do you all think of Kim's skills with natural hair?

Well, its been a couple weeks since my last blog entry. I have been extremely busy working, conferences and training. I know many of you working mothers/wives know the drill. While attending conferences I have run into a few natural hair colleagues. It was awesome to share and amuse ourselves with natural hair talk. A few of the ladies inquired about the smoothness of my curls. So I decided to share my process of achieving those smooth curls..... Its very simple, I blow dry my washed hair using medium heat or I sit under a hair dryer until it is completely dry (pictured above). After its dry, (sometimes) I pull into a ponytail for a day to give it a little more stretch. When I'm ready to style, I use rods, eco styler gel and Black Jamaican Castor Oil. If I want the style to last 7 days I use Murrays, yep you read it right.....Murrays hair dressing. That stuff make my hairstyles last forever!!!!! BUT its a beast to wash out. I have been using Murrays for about 9 months, I haven't noticed any damage and it works for my hair. In both pictures below, I used Murrays and Eco Styler gel to style my hair. Featuring my handsome Hubby :) I'd like to hear from you ladies...How do you achieve smooth curls heat or heatless? Naturally beautiful, this Natural Diva is rocking a fierce twist-out!!!!! Here's how she accomplished big fluffy define curls: "This is a twist-out using As I Am Double Butter Cream. I did small twists on stretched hair. I re-twist at night in bigger sections to maintain it."
I'm back in the winter of Indiana....Already missing the beautiful weather in Sunshine State. I spent 7 days in Florida with successful hair!!! On Thursday morning the boys and I drove from Jacksonville to Cape Canaveral (Cocoa Beach) to enjoy the ocean and sun. My hair held up nicely, below is a picture of Day 3 hair and a picture of my boys at the ocean. On Friday we arrived at Walt Disney for a day of fun at the Magic Kingdom. For some reason, I had it in my mind EVERY kid should experience the Magic Kingdom. Boy do I regret it!!! My kids were not impressed! They were extremely bored and my youngest child (9 years old) wanted nothing to do with the character parades or the rides! Day 4 and 5 my hair continued to hold up with very little maintenance, pictured below. We spent a few days exploring Orlando, swimming at the vacation home and Hollywood Studios. Seaworld was a big hit! My kids and I enjoyed the dolphins, rides and Shamu! Overall a great vacation and I was really impressed with my hair! No fuss and no hassles. I was thinking my hair would be in a full fro by the end of the vacation, but those rodset curls hung in there the entire week!
Hey Divas!!! My current situation.....Spring Break in Florida with my boys! We landed today in Orlando, Florida with a very fun, exciting and busy agenda, starting with 2 days in Jacksonville visiting with my Aunt. My hair situation consist of flat braids in the front and a rodset on the loose hair. I decided to get an inch 1/2 cut off, my ends were rachet..... The plans for my hair include letting the rodset fill out until it's an afro by the end of our 7 day trip. Picture below depicts a very tired me on my first day in Florida...... So pay more attention to the hairstyle.... Hoping to catch up on some rest and relaxation on the beach!
Until last year I was a thriving henna head. I loved how the herb made my hair thick, shiny and healthy. The advantages consisted of very strong hair strands, manageability of my coils and elongated fluffy curls. However, after using henna for 3 years, I noticed that I was beginning to develop a habit. It was absolutely mandatory to henna my hair every 6 weeks. The experience was all too familiar; it was almost like being on creamy crack all over again (without the harsh chemicals). I felt like I NEEDED henna to make my hair stand out. When I realized I had an addiction to henna, I also began to notice my gray hair coming in FULL FORCE. Henna tends to turn gray hair an orange/coppery color. No matter how much I henna’d my hair; the grays never turned the red/burgundy color I wanted. So I came to terms with my addiction to henna and graying hair. I decided to stop the henna treatments. Even though, I have overcome the henna addiction, my hair is less fluffy and the shrinkage is NO JOKE. But I’ve learned to work with what I have. Some days are better than others. While the henna did help with consistency, I'm learning new tricks on along the way. Natural hair is a continual journey...... The other day, I almost had a relapse, I wanted to Henna very badly but I thought about the consequences…..Those ugly orange strands of hair…. Are there any henna addiction groups out there? *raises hand*
“Hi my name is Kisha…..and I am a recovering henna addict”…… I was on Facebook today scrolling down my news feed, when I came across this gorgeous picture of Nashira (pictured below). Of course I had to inbox her and find out how she achieved this hairstyle. She responded and now I'm passing along the instructions on how to achieve this gorgeous braid-out!!!! "It's a braid out on freshly washed hair . I washed with cream of nature argon oil sulfate free shampoo . Then I put Shea Moisture Balancing Conditioner for my leave in . Braided with Elasta QP Glaze Conditioning Gel . Sealed my ends with the leave in and a little coconut oil. Also used the orange curling rods on the ends of my hair". Below are photos of the products Nashira used to accomplished this hairstyle. There you have it ladies!!!
Product Claims: “A luxurious crème leave-in that is excellent on natural, relaxed, transitioning, and color treated hair. Enriched with natural ingredients from My Secret Recipe, your hair will be left soft, shiny, manageable, and oh so sweet! “ Benefits: • My Secret Recipe conditions, moisturizes and ends breakage, and damage • Wonderful detangler and knot remover • Protects hair from heat styling and adds super shine • Strengthens hair & scalp • Excellent as a leave-in or rinse out conditioner My dear natural friend introduced me to Nene’s Secret L.I.C (Leave-in Conditioner). I washed my hair as normal and applied the conditioner to my hair. Instantly my coils fell in love with the conditioner. I noticed some curl definition, easy detangling, and softness. HOWEVER, the smell is something awful! It is very strong and lasting. It reminds me of some cheap lingering perfume. I love the results of my hair, but the smell is too overwhelming and caused me to feel a bit nauseous. The ingredients are not listed or available, I guess because it’s “Nene’s Secret”. I was a little skeptical about using the product, due to the lack of information. I went to the website which ensured the product contained natural ingredients, really didn’t mean anything because I wanna know what the heck I’m putting in my hair. But nevertheless, I gave it a try, scared and all. I don’t think it will be one of my staple products, only because of the scent and the unknown secret.
I continued with a two-strand twist using castor oil and eco-styler gel. Interesting enough the castor oil didn't mask the perfume smell, and yall know castor oil has a very distinctive smell. The results of my twist-out. Its been a harsh winter and my hair is feeling the effects. I swear one of my twist was froze with icicles hanging from the end. Even though my tresses have been in protective styles for the past 2 months, I felt the need to cover my strands. Therefore, I have been sporting hats and hair scarves to keep my hair from getting frostbit (literally). For ideas on how to use hair scarves I turned to the old faithful Youtube. Thought I would share this video for those naturals also experiencing the polar vortex. This is picture is an oldie from last summer. Reminiscing on the warmer months and looking forward to this winter being OVER!
Family is always very important to me. So this Valentine's Day is dedicated to the men in my life.....My sons and my hubby. They have been my biggest cheerleaders during my natural hair journey. Always supporting me through the EPIC hair fails, natural hair events and countless hours in the hair product aisles. They have shown a "natural" love for me and the natural hair community by openly expressing and acknowledging women with beautiful kinky/coils. So today, I present my LOVES...... Whenever, I straighten my hair my oldest son Ameer comments "when are you washing your hair back"? Check out Ameer's perspective of natural hair (click here). My youngest son Aden is always persuading me to "rock a BIG afro mommy"... And finally, my soul mate....Sjon (pronounced Shawn) has been supportive of my natural hair from day one. He was confident in my choice to go natural when I wasn't confident in myself. The words he spoke so eloquently "I didn't marry you for your hair".... was additional inspiration for me to continue on the journey. I love my hair and the fact that he does too is an added bonus! My husband is an avid supporter of the natural community. He has expressed a very profound perspective on women who rock natural curls. Click below to check out his perspective.
