From my experience, the first stages of becoming natural were very difficult. Like myself, most Newly Naturals are so excited for their BC (Big Chop) moment and feel liberated thereafter. However, as the days and weeks go on, the uncertainty began to settle, and your self-confidence is tested. You began to ask yourself…..what have I done? What to do with my hair? The negative thoughts began to flood your mind, “I look ugly”, “My hair Nappy”, “I don’t have Tracy Ellis Ross Curls”. During this time it is important to connect with other naturals (natural hair meetups and/or a natural curl friend) draw from their experiences and learn how they overcame those “dark stages”. Use accessories and makeup, to enhance your natural beauty. If you are having trouble with styling your TWA (teeny-weeny afro), go to a natural hair stylist and allow them to use their creativity. If that’s not an option go to youtube, don’t be afraid to try new things! And most importantly have confidence!
My husband and I were at a shopping mall last weekend. As we strolled down the main entrance of the mall, we saw a beautiful young lady with natural hair. She was stunning to say the least. But it was something about her walk and the way she carried herself. You could certainly tell she was a newly natural. It was evident she wasn't sure about her new look and lacked a bit of confidence. As she got closer to us, my husband simply smiled and said “I like your hair, you look very nice”. Immediately she began to smile, patted her hair and said “thank you”. She looked at me and I gave her that knowingly smile. I turned and watched her walk away; her stride had changed, now with a bit more confidence and ease. I took my husband hand and gave it a squeeze with approval; I was simply amazed at how in tune he is to natural hair and our journeys. In my everlasting journey of perfecting a twist out, I have come to learn twisting on dry hair not only defines a twist out but it also provides more shine and less frizz. Here are step by step instructions on how to achieve a defined twist out on dry hair. Step 1: After I wash and condition (Shea Moisture Deep Conditioner Masque)my hair using a sulfate free shampoo (Design Essential Curl Cleanser), I add a leave-in conditioner (As I am). I use a held hand blow dryer on medium to dry my hair or allow it to air dry. <--------Yeah, I know the picture looks like a mug shot. Step 2: I use eco styler gel and Black Jamaican Castor Oil while 2 strand twisting my hair. I add a roller to the end to add more definition to the curls. I go to bed with the rods in my hair. <----------Yep, I got up and went to Kinkos at 2am in the morning with my head looking like this..... Step 3: I remove the rods from the ends. Use your favorite essential oil (EVOO, Coconut oil, ect), to add a little shine while unraveling your twist. Here's your chance to win Shea Moisture Products and a Natural Diva T-shirt!

The site recently asked the singer to share her tips on caring for natural hair, which she embraced once she moved to New York when she was 18 years old. "It was kind of a rebirth of my free natural self and so I was like, 'I'm just going to wear my hair how it naturally is and that's the way I like it,'" she tells Vogue.com. "I was lucky because I worked at a salon my first job in New York and so I was constantly getting my hair done by the different stylists and being the hair test for people who wanted to become stylists. I'm kind of a tomboy so it kind of goes with my style, a little bit unkempt and wild." Kish then lists a few of her favorite products that keep her tresses healthy like Aubrey White Camellia Ultra-Smoothing Conditioner and Goldies Argan Hair Oil. "To do my hair in this style, it's basically my natural hair and all that I do is try to keep it moisturized and keep the curls a little bit more defined. And so I take a shower in the morning and I use Aubrey Organics White Camellia Conditioner in it and I just run it through and get all the tangles out. Then I let it air dry usually. When it's wet, I'll add an Argan oil or something so it soaks up the moisture." By now you all should know using Curl Rods is one of my favorite styling tools! Its very easy. Simply 2 strand twist the hair on air-dry hair (decreases frizz) halfway down. Saturate the loose end of the twist with product (I use Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Eco Styler Gel). Apply the curl rod to the loose hair in a spiral direction. Go to bed and in the morning remove rods, separate the curls, apply some oil and Waalah! I get 7 day hair out of this style! Natural hair is not as hard as some "THINK" it is.
