It started almost 4 years ago. I big chopped and had no clue what products to use. So of course, I visited Sally's, Walmart, Wholefood Store, Target, and many more to begin my quest of finding the miracle product. I was worried about my hair; I wanted it to be soft and healthy. I tried many products but to no avail. My behavior started to worsen each time I read Natural Hair blogs and learned about some wonderful hair product that would take my worries away. Before I knew it, I had an addiction; I was a true Product Junkie (PJ) but of course I was in denial. The excitement of standing in line to purchase the product was an instant high. I couldn’t wait to get home to try it. It would be momentarily that I would find out the “natural high” wasn’t enough. So back to the internet I would go and then to the local beauty supply store. My bank account started to reflect my bad habit, but of course I didn’t care (smh).
The Intervention: My husband and kids sat me down and said “You are spending a lot of money on hair products, you don’t even use half of them and we are tired of spending countless hours in the store while you shop for hair products, this is affecting us too!” So my hubby established a budget for my hair products and allotted 15 minutes in hair product aisles. I accepted the “the gift” I was ready to stop this PJ madness.
It wasn’t until I experienced an embarrassing PJ moment that I realized I had truly lost it….. I decided to go Sally's Beauty Supply on this particular day. I had hair product money (budgeted by the hubby) in my purse and was excited! I walked into Sally's and went straight to the Ethnic Hair Aisle. I was feeling good, until I noticed a new Natural Hair Product Line…..OMG!!! I became frantic, I quickly ran to grab a shopping cart. The familiar symptoms of a Product Junkie-ism were coming on strong. I loaded the shopping cart with products and went straight to the clerk…OH BOY was I tweeking!! The store clerk rang up my purchases and the grand total was $80.76. I grabbed for my cash and remembered I only had $25….LOL! I looked at my cash, back at the clerk then at the products. I decided on a few products but it was still over my budget. I asked the clerk if she had any coupons. The clerk stared at me like I was crazy, patiently waiting for me to pay. With the most pathetic look, I said “Forget the container, just pour the product in my hands”….. I had become “Pookie” from the movie New Jack City.
